Workshop “Writing and pedagogy”– report of the first session

Within the frame of the training workshop organized by the IRMC (Research Institute for the Contemporary Maghreb) around the topic “Writing and Pedagogy” the first session was held on January 15th2018 at the library of the institution and was chaired by Prof. Kmar Ben Dana. Twenty-two scholars/researchers from different disciplines (law, geography, history, urbanism, architecture, sociology, English applied linguistics, ICT, political sciences, archaeology, anthropology, philosophy) and institutions (the universities of Canstantine 3, Kairouan, Jendouba, Sousse, Sfax) participated inthe Workshop.

The welcome address by the director of the IRMC, Prof. Oissila Saidia, emphasized the openness of the institution towards the University and evoked the need to enhance the scientific activities,accordingly. Thereupon, she kicked off the first training session and promised to continue in the same direction to promote scholars´ training.

The debate among participants was centred around the stakes of teaching and research in the digital era. It also tackled the new methods relevant to universityteaching whichaimat overcoming the difficulties faced and innovating the teaching exercise. 

The following topics have been discussed:

  • Multilingualism : Teaching in different languages, translating concepts and terms and implement them into pedagogical practices and tools.
  • Pluridisciplinarity: going beyond limited disciplinary borders and insisting on the complementarity among the different disciplines in human and social sciences and disseminating know-how.
  • Networking: Networking of higher education institutions in order to provide a better information about scientific activities and events, as well as training sessions.
  • The combination of the three supervision processes: reading, writing, and publishing.
  • The strengthening of technical and didactic tools relevant to teaching in order to motivate and attract students with the most appropriate techniques adapted to their generation andby questioning the reliability of electronic resources in teaching and research, as well.
  • The link between higher education and the evolution of the society at all levels is essential; basically, at the technological one. This interrelation triggers stakeholders to reflect on the innovation of new pedagogical practices.
  • Rethinking individual careers in terms of teaching quality anduniversity ranking at the international level.
